Amalia Ulman (born 1989) is an Argentine-Spanish artist, actress and filmmaker. Her work which consists of performance, installation, video and internet art works are multidisciplinary practice constructs narrative fictions which explore the tensions between global forces, public image, and private desires. Her work deals with issues of class, gender, sexuality, and middlebrow aesthetics, and blurs the distinction between herself and the object of study, often creating humorous, gentle deceptions, while exploring class imitation and the relationship between consumerism and identity. Always pushing the boundaries of performance, her fictional narratives often take place on unexpected platforms.
In 2021, Ulman made her feature film directorial debut with El Planeta, an absurdist comedy film starring herself and her mother Ale Ulman. The film had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on January 30, 2021.
Ulman’s sophomore film Magic Farm, starring Chloë Sevigny, Alex Wolff, and Simon Rex, premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and screened at the Panorama section of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival.
